The Real Me

I'm Jessieh Rey O. Dalo 17 years of age a 4th year student of Lupon Vocational High School. I'm optimistic, I have a talent on performing arts. And besides of physical appearance I have a rare beauty that can be proud of. At my young age I prefer to develop my talent in performing arts and motivate myself through my talent. I'm one of the member of the Kaagan Dance Theater Collective, I really enjoy what I'm doing now. Through KDTC I've learned to be a motivated person,I'm also a disciplined person and every time if we have rehearsals I'm responsible doing my daily exercise so that I have lot of energy and also I take vitamins, eating a balance diet regularly. In spite of joining the KDTC I have also take time to my family. I love my family because every time i have shows they supported me. Sometimes I encountered struggles but I decide to solve it in a right way and follow it to the end and requires some of the same courage with a soldier needs. Remember that he who loses wealth loses much. He who loses a friend, loses more. But he that loses his courage, loses all. They laugh at me because I'm different, I laugh at them because they are all the same, It's not that I like being different I just don't the point of trying to be someone else. Some won't appreciate what you say or do, but as long as you speak honestly from the heart and let them see who you really are, you'll be fine. This is not a perfect world; this is not a perfect life. So live life the you want because no matter what you do, people would never run out of something to say against you.

What is Identity?

A psychological identity relates to self-image (a person's mental model of him or herself), self-esteem, and individuality. An important part of identity in psychology is gender identity, as this dictates to a significant degree how an individual views him or herself both as a person and in relation to other people, ideas and nature. In cognitive psychology, the term "identity" refers to the capacity for self-reflection and the awareness of self.Sociology places some explanatory weight on the concept of role-behavior. The notion of identity negotiation may arise from the learning of social roles through personal experience. Identity negotiation is a process in which a person negotiates with society at large regarding the meaning of his or her identity.Psychologists most commonly use the term "identity" to describe personal identity, or the idiosyncratic thing that make a person unique. Meanwhile, sociologists often use the term to describe social identity, or the collection of group memberships that define the individual. However, these uses are not proprietary, and each discipline may use either concept.

What I have learned about Ramadhan

Ramadan begins with the appearance of the new moon, and it ends at the appearance of the next new moon, which begins the month of Shawwal. The Islamic calendar is the lunar calendar, thus Ramadan rotates gradually throughout the season. Fasting(saum in Arabic) is one of the obligations that is found in almost all the religions which existed before Islam. Fasting is compulsory for all Muslims; men and women, rich or poor alike. (Girls are required to fast from the age of nine, boys from the age of fifteen.)This is not only an obligation; its virtues have been acknowledge by intellectual from all ages.

The Practices of The Five Pillars of Islam

The Five Pillars of Islam (Arabic: أركان الإسلام) is the term given to the five duties incumbent on every Sunni Muslim. These duties are Shahadah (profession of faith), Salah (prayers), Zakat (giving of alms), Sawm (fasting, specifically during Ramadan) and Hajj (pilgrimage to Mecca). These five practices are essential to Sunni Muslims; Shi'a Muslims subscribe to eight ritual practices which substantially overlap with the five Pillars.[1] Twelvers have five fundamental beliefs which relates to Aqidah.

Shahadah, the acknowledgement of God

According to the Qur'an, "There is no deity worthy of worship except God, and Muhammad is His messenger." This declaration of faith is called the shahadah, a simple formula which all of the faithful Muslims pronounce daily. Intrinsic in this action is the acknowledgment of Muhammad, as "Muhammad is not the father of any of your men, but he is the Messenger of God and the Seal of the Prophets. And God has full knowledge of all things." [Qur'an: Surah al-Ahzab 33:40]

Salah, prayer

Muslims "MUST" and are obliged to perform ritual prayers or salah five times a day :
  • In the morning (al fajr)
  • After midday (ad dh hur)
  • midway between midday and sunset (al 'asr)
  • Right after sunset (al maghrib)
  • one hour after sunset (al 'isha)
  • A Muslim can offer extra optional prayer(s) any other time.

Before prayer is the ritual of ablution, a ceremonial cleansing with water (or alternatively, with sand) which is usually performed. The parts cleansed include arms, head, and the feet up to the ankles. If the cleansing was done using water, the Muslim is considered to have wudhu, which means that he or she has cleansed him or herself from the physical manifestations of sin in a lasting fashion that extends between prayers. In other words, unless the Muslim does something to remove this cleanliness, the cleansing would not need to be repeated before the next prayer. When sand is used, the cleansing is only temporary and regardless of whether or not the Muslim commits any physical acts of uncleanliness he or she will need to undergo the ceremonial cleansing immediately before the next prayer.

The salah must be performed in the Arabic language (even if the person neither speaks nor understands Arabic; the prayers are to be recited by heart), and include praises to Allah, the shahada, a plea for forgiveness and various blessings, Chapter one (al Fatihah) and one or more other parts of the Koran (by heart) and an optional prayer of one's own. The entire session includes standing upright, bowing down, kneeling and prostrating oneself. The session ends with looking right and left to say "Peace be unto you, and on you be peace" in Arabic to the believers sitting with you. There is also the angels that Muslims believe sit on both shoulders (the angel on the right is said to record the person's good deeds and the one on the left is said to record the person's bad deeds).

Zakah, the paying of alms

A major principle of Islam is the belief that all things belong to God and that wealth is only held by human beings in trust. The word zakah means both purification and growth. Each Muslim calculates his or her own zakah individually, and for most purposes this involves the payment each year of two and a half percent of one's capital in excess of one's basic needs. A Muslim may also donate an additional amount as an act of voluntary charity (sadaqah), in order to achieve additional divine reward. Zakah is calculated on the basis of 2.5% of an amount in excess of what you have in hand, after the needs of the family has been met.

Sawm or siyam, fasting

Observance of the Siyam involves abstinence from eating, drinking, smoking, sexual intercourse, and other forms of worldly pleasure. This fasting is ordained in the Quran, and is observed by devout Muslims throughout the daylight hours of the 29 or 30 days of the lunar month of Ramadan. There are some exceptions, for example for children, pregnant women, sick Muslims, laborers, and travelers.

As well as fasting, Muslims spend more time praying during this period. Siyam is intended to teach patience and self-control, and is seen as a debt owed by the believer to Allah.

Hajj, the pilgrimage

The final pillar of Islam is the pilgrimage to Mecca performed during the month of Zul Hijjah. Performance of the Hajj at least once in one's lifetime is obligatory to all who are physically and financially able to undertake it, and about two million people go to Mecca each year. Pilgrims wear a distinctive attire of simple garments to strip away distinctions of class and culture, so that all stand equal before God. Performance of the Hajj involves a series of rituals, including encircling the most holy shrine of Islam, the Ka'aba, a giant square house covered with a black cloth that lies in the center of a large square court. It also includes throwing stones at a hill outside the court, which symbolizes driving away evil spirits.

In previous centuries the Hajj was an arduous and potentially hazardous undertaking. However, with the advent of modern transport and adequate infrastructure, Saudi Arabia is now able to accommodate the millions of annual visitors. A shorter, simpler version of the pilgrimage can be made as well, but this does not 'count' as one of the five pillars.

The Five Pillars of Islam in the Shia sect

Arguably the concept of "Five Pillars of Islam" (Arkan-al-Islam) does not exist in the Shia faith. The Usool-ul-Deen, which means The Principles of The Religion are merely five articles of faith which are believed to be fundamental to the Islamic faith. These principles are listed at the end. The concept of "Furoo-ul-Deen", which means the branches of religion which contain ten obligations that are considered fundamental to the Islamic faith can probably be considered to correlate more closely to the Sunni concept of "Five pillars".

Four of the five Sunni pillars are represented in the furoo-ul-deen except the shahada (Testimony of Faith). The usool-ul-deen can be viewed as an exegesis on the shahada; Tawheed (Oneness of God) representing "There is no God but Allah", Nubuwwah (Prophethood) representing "Muhammad is the messenger of God" and Imamah (Leadership on mankind) representing "Ali is the heir of God" which many Shia add to the recital of the shahada. While Adl (The Just nature of God) defines an essential aspect of the God which has been affirmed in the first part of the shahada, the belief in Qiyamaah (Resurrection) affirms the need to proclaim the shahada.

Modern Muslims and the pillars of IslamDespite that the five pillars are obligatory for Muslims, not all individual Muslims can, or do, participate. This is due to a variety of reasons. For Muslims living in Western societies time and energy consuming duties such as Ramadan or the five daily prayers are difficult to observe. Secularized Muslims may have stopped participating in religious duties altogether, or have chosen to only participate in, for instance, the Ramadan fast. Such choices, however, are not only a matter of do's and don'ts, but also of belonging and not-belonging, since Muslim culture is a group culture. Participating in such religious duties therefore is not necessarily a criterion for the depth of each individual's religiosity or faith.

Ramadan and Hajj of Islam

Ramadan (Arabic: رمضانRamaḍān, Arabic pronunciation: [rɑmɑd̪ˤɑːn]) (also written Ramazan, Ramzan, Ramadhan, Ramdan, Ramadaan) is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar. It is the Islamic month of fasting, in which participating Muslims refrain from eating, drinking, smoking, and indulging in anything that is in excess or ill-natured; from dawn until sunset.[1] Fasting is meant to teach the Muslim patience, modesty and spirituality. Ramadan is a time for Muslims to fast for the sake of God (Arabic: الله‎) and to offer more prayer than usual. During Ramadan, Muslims ask forgiveness for past sins, pray for guidance and help in refraining from everyday evils, and try to purify themselves through self-restraint and good deeds. As compared to the solar calendar, the dates of Ramadan vary, moving forward about ten days each year as it is a moving holiday depending on the moon. Ramadan was the month in which the first verses of the Qur'an were said to be revealed to the Islamic P

The Hajj (Arabic: حجḤaǧǧ) is a pilgrimage in Mecca. It is currently the largest annual pilgrimage in the world,[1] and is the fifth pillar of Islam, a religious duty that must be carried out at least once in their lifetime by every able-bodied Muslim who can afford to do so. The Hajj is a demonstration of the solidarity of the Muslim people, and their submission to God (Allah in the Arabic language).[2] The pilgrimage occurs from the 7th to 13th day of Dhu al-Hijjah, the 12th month of the Islamic calendar. Because the Islamic calendar is a lunar calendar, eleven days shorter than the Gregorian calendar used in the Western world, the Gregorian date of the Hajj changes from year to year. In 2007, the Hajj was from December 17–21; in 2008 from December 6–10, and in 2009 it was from November 25–29. Ihram is the name given to the special state in which Muslims live whilst on the pilgrimage,

Prophet Muhammad.

Save Mother Earth (Batas Kalikasan Ay Kalinisan)

Last Wednesday our Araling Panlipunan teacher gave us a project for our school for the development of the LVHS campus because she notice that many students are throwing their garbage anywhere in the school campus, she explains us how important the mother nature is. If we are going to abuse our nature we know already what is the feedback that nature may gave to us, abusing like cutting down trees on the mountains (Kaingin), smoke from factories can pollute air, throwing garbage to rivers anywhere and what so ever.I don't think any hesitation for the said project, I really agreed on what idea our teacher shared to us. It is a lesson for me on how important our mother nature in our lives and for the next generation they will see how beautiful our natural abundant resources is.

Galanin, The Chemical Behind Obesity

Sarah Leibowitz of Rockfell University revealed that our brain releases a chemical known as galanin. This chemical stimulates the intake of fatty foods. In a vicious circle, this subsequently increases the production of more galanin. Leibowitz noted that the level of galanin is very high among those nearing puberty. Females, in particular, have an extra capacity for producing the chemical. This, according to Leibowitz, could explain with the boys. If we don't want to become overwieght, Leibowitz stressed that the key is to exercise and eat a balanced diet.

Experience being talented

I'am the student aware of culture and also a member of the Kaagan Dance Theatre Collective (KDTC) and we are promoting the Kaagan tribe here in Davao Oriental. Kaagan tribe has a distinct unique and colorful heritage that needs to be preserve and to be handed down generation to generation.
Nowadays, youths do not have the interest of their culture and tradition most of them are ashamed of their identity, their race even their practices. It is now high time awaken their young minds and open their eyes to the importance and beauty of their culture.
